As a relative newcomer to Colorado and Steamboat Springs, I have a long list of extraordinary outdoor adventures on my family’s Colorado wish list: hiking Devil’s Causeway, whitewater rafting the Yampa through Dinosaur National Monument, flying down every run at each ski resort, overnight pack trips along the Continental Divide and lots of rock climbing - just to name a few. We have begun to hack away at this list, but - in the meantime - we are at home in Steamboat Springs with the everyday. This is where Steamboat grabs me!
Shoveling snow can get old, but this Monday I still marvel when the downy flakes fall off the edge of the deck like flour from a sifter. I delight at performing this feat dressed only in T-shirt and jeans, thanks to the sun that lives so close and pours its heat deep inside my core. Today, at least, it has not been banished by heavy-laden snow clouds.
Tuesday, I drive the kids 12 miles in to and out of town. This daily drive always proves a discovery of the ever-changing landscape. Today, the road is a steaming, sun-drenched, partially snow-covered journey embraced by fields layered with a snow blanket of sparkling diamonds. As I round each bend, the clouds suspend themselves at different levels on the mountains as they make the rounds to visit their old friends. Meanwhile, the sun plays peek-a-boo with each high peak in turn, spot-lighting one craggy boulder or a clump of aspens.
Wednesday, I walk the dogs down the lane and find myself laughing aloud at their antics. Following the trail of a fox or coyote, they swim off into the deep snow and quickly become only bobbing, bodiless heads bounding along after their long-hidden prey. Occasionally, they submerge completely, only to reappear with a fake beard of powder on their muzzles, hopefully sniffing the air.
Thursday, I take out the trash on a bluebird day. The blue of the Colorado sky pierces my eyes, permeates my mind, plunges warmth into my body, and pirouettes around in my heart leaving me woozy and breathless.
Friday, I sweep the spring muck out of the garage and the mountains draw my eyes, my heart and my soul - up and beyond the ordinary. Their grand mystery calls me to explore each of their pine forests, aspen groves and jagged boulders. Mystery that reels me in and brings a promise and a smile.
Every day, there are chores, errands and even some disappointments, but if you keep your eyes open, in Steamboat everyday is extraordinary.
